Journal entry
A manual accounting record that moves amounts between accounts, with equal debits and credits.
Most transactions are recorded automatically by charges, payments and bills. Journal entries handle everything else: accruals, corrections, reclassifications, depreciation and transfers between properties.
Because manual entries can change results without a supporting document, many companies require a memo, an attachment and a second person's approval before they post. Recurring journal entries save time on predictable monthly adjustments. Reviewing manual entries each month is a standard audit step.
