Move-out accounting
Closing out a departing resident's account: final charges, credits, deposit application and any refund or balance due.
Move-out accounting prorates final rent, adds charges for damages or cleaning, applies the security deposit and any prepaid amounts, and produces either a refund or a balance owed. That balance then goes to collections or is written off as bad debt.
Getting it right and on time matters because most states set deadlines and itemization rules for returning deposits. Errors lead to disputes and, in some states, penalties.
