Reasonable accommodation

A change to a rule, policy or service that a person with a disability needs for equal use of their home.

Examples include allowing an assistance animal in a no-pet building, assigning an accessible parking space, or changing how rent is paid. A related concept, reasonable modification, covers physical changes to the unit or common areas.

Under fair housing law, providers generally must grant requests that are reasonable and related to a disability, and requests can be made verbally. Handle each request promptly and consistently, and involve counsel on difficult cases.
